The rate of interest charged on overnight loans from banks´ deposit accounts held at the Federal Reserve (the USA´s central monetary authority) to other banks; This is a closely watched short term interest rate as it signals the Feds view as to the state of the money supply. It is the most sensitive indicator of the direction of interest rates.
